The Missions: San Francisco and San José

Unless the mission is oriented by charity, that is, unless it springs from a profound act of divine love, it risks being reduced to mere philanthropic and social activity...Consequently, being missionaries means loving God with all one's heart, even to the point, if necessary, of dying for him. - Pope Benedict XVI

as i walked into the bathroom to take a shower yesterday i saw this medium (2") cockroach pressed against the wall. instead of doing the normal drunken scurry to safety, he played possum. so, i just let him be. after i got out of the shower he had relocated closer to the shower, still gazing up at me. the whole thing was too kafkian for me, so i told him to go home (i assume he was a spanish-speaking roach). well, wouldn't you know it, this afternoon i entered and saw not one, but two cockroaches waiting for me. after making sure one was a boy and the other a girl (i bet you didn't know you could do that) i named them hansel and gretel and have come to the conclusion that it is indeed time for a little vacation. the ten-day countdown begins right now...
