The Missions: San Francisco and San José

Unless the mission is oriented by charity, that is, unless it springs from a profound act of divine love, it risks being reduced to mere philanthropic and social activity...Consequently, being missionaries means loving God with all one's heart, even to the point, if necessary, of dying for him. - Pope Benedict XVI

today i drove 1.5 hours on the bike to say Mass for six people, 3 of whom received Communion, which incedentally, is 50% communicants, smashing the old record of 11%. more noteworthy, however, was that when i told the small group to crank out the opening hymn, this old man began singing and my jaw hit the floor. he made pavarotti sound like a two-bit croner. this man had pitch, tone, tempo, and key nailed. even more impressive was his ability to sing with a certain lament that added an errie life to the songs. i can truly say that i have never heard the like. next time i go there i will try to bring the phone an have him sing an audblog...
